CITY PRESS has a vacancy for a DEPUTY PRODUCTION EDITOR based in Randburg, Johannesburg.

City Press is a respected news brand that publishes across platforms. Its flagship print edition is distributed nationally on a Sunday, but it also has a popular online platform, newsletters, and social media platforms that are growing quickly and are followed closely by influencers and readers.

Main purpose of the role:

As a deputy production editor, you will be responsible for ensuring that articles published meet the required standard of accuracy and are error free. You will also work closely with members of the editorial team, including copy and lay-out sub editors, journalists, and other section editors.

Duties

• Ensure that all copy is delivered within stipulated deadlines and to standard, as well as to proofread pages and graphics, including subediting web copy.
• Editing copy, including for length, style and structure; and writing captions, headlines and blurbs
• Identify weaknesses in articles/stories and take action to rectify the problems.
• Edit and rewrite copy from journalists and freelancers, ensuring copy is accurate and of the highest quality.
• Regular engagement in copy processing in the CMS and good understanding of the CMS.
• Keeping abreast of developments in South African English and media law.
• Accurate and creative caption and headline writing;

• Speed, tenacity and accuracy;
• The ability to write punchy tabloid headlines and captions;
• Thorough knowledge of media law;
• Advanced computer literacy;
• Extremely well developed English language skills;
• Good knowledge of newspaper production;
• Thorough knowledge of current affairs;
• The ability to work tightly with a team and take instruction.

The successful candidate has to meet the following criteria:

• At least eight years’ experience in copy subbing and revise;
• Skilled at writing headlines and captions;
• Other applicable experience in journalism;
• Ability to work independently and meet daily deadlines;
• A diploma or degree in journalism or related field will strengthen the application.
